Some of the duties of an estimator are to provide accurate projections of quantities, as well as the costs of construction materials, labor, and equipment that is required to complete a project. Estimators are also responsible for soliciting bids from subcontractors and vendors, making certain that the work they can provide is compatible with Codell Construction’s own vision for the project. To become an estimator, a person must be able to read construction drawings and successfully interpret project specifications. A bachelor’s degree in Construction or Engineering is generally preferred.
If you have a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or another related field, as well as four years of experience in construction, you can become a project engineer. A project engineer is active in the areas of scheduling, cost engineering, subcontract coordination, and general project management.
Project managers supervise all activities related to contracts, change orders, submittals, procurement, and schedules. They are essentially responsible for the administrative and technical support of projects. Project managers generally have a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, as well as nine years of experience in the industry.
If you have 10 years of field supervising experience in the construction of major commercial or institutional building projects, you can become a superintendent. The functions of a superintendent are supervising all construction in the field and making sure the work is completed in a timely and cost-effective manner. They are also responsible for safety and quality control procedures at the work site.
